The Village Hall has been at the heart of our community for more than half a century:
· It hosts and supports local organisations including Sustainable Worth, the Film Club, the Snooker Group and the Book Club. While the work of re-roofing the Parish Church of St Nicholas of Myra has been underway, church services have all been held in the Hall. We do not charge these organisations as we see it as part of our core objective to encourage use of the Hall by local village groups.
· It helps with fund raising for very worthy causes such as My Time (assisting young carers), the Swanage Food Bank and the Church Re-roofing Appeal.
· It provides the principal venue and organising body for village events including the Village Fete and Carols on the Green as well as historic celebrations (the late Queen’s Jubilee and the current King’s Coronation for instance), and is also the polling station for the village.
· It is a venue for local people and organisations, such as PASH, the Parish Council, the Purbeck Film festival to use.
Our objective is always to make the Village Hall a place where people can meet their neighbours and friends, learn and have fun. Over the years it has helped develop the village’s identity as an open and welcoming community with a wide range of activities to take part in.
As your trustees, we are the custodians of this very old and beautiful building and our continued focus has been to maintain and improve the Village Hall facilities for the whole community to enjoy. With this purpose in mind, recent works have involved structural repairs to the stone roof, the gutters and the wooden window frames.
These necessary short term actions have significantly depleted our funding reserves and have forced us to delay further works including important refurbishments and improvements that we would like to carry out as soon as possible. These will involve the complete renovation of our toilet facilities with improved disabled access, the redecoration of our main hall with essential works to safeguard the fabric of the building (treating damp and rewiring) and the modernisation of the kitchen facilities. These works aim to improve our facilities for all users of the Village Hall.
The costing of these works is well in excess of our current resources and the Village Hall committee has therefore set the objective of raising £30,000 for the immediate work and a further £40,000 for 2026 and beyond. We will work hard to apply for grants and other charitable funding, and we will keep you updated on our progress. The trustees will also double down on our fund raising activities at the Hall.
Please get involved and continue to lend us your support so that generations to come are able to enjoy the Village Hall as a self-sustaining, fit for purpose space open to all.
Previous experience has shown that one of the most effective ways of fundraising is villagers donating directly to the charity and this can be done here. Please click below for details.
