Sustainable Worth

Who are we?

In 2020 during the pandemic, Kathy Hollidge recognised that there was a strong local interest in wildlife and more opportunity in Worth for the community to address climate change and loss of nature. Thus, Sustainable Worth was created to help maintain and indeed improve what we value. Examples are cleaner sea and beaches, more efficient transport, much less waste, more abundant and varied wildlife and sustainable tourism that works for us all.

None of this is easy to achieve, but we CAN achieve more when we’re working together, having fun, encouraging ourselves to make a difference. We currently have 55 subscribers to our mailing list and 25 participating in our WhatsApp group. See below for details. We’d love you to join us.

Sustainable Worth has been created to counter the impact of Climate Change and to protect and restore local wildlife. We want to live more sustainably and bring people together by sharing knowledge and providing accessible solutions which are engaging and fun.

We work closely with Planet Purbeck:

Here are some examples of what has been achieved to date in our community:

St Nicholas Church joined the Eco Church scheme and in 2021 was given a Silver award. It is not just a case of looking after the Churchyard with wildlife in mind as well as people, but also considering and improving how sustainability is taken into account in worship and teaching, looking after the building, community and global engagement and lifestyle.

The Withy Bed is situated on Pikes Lane near the bus shelter.  The Withies were always pruned in the late winter which provided new growth for weaving articles such as lobster pots for local fishermen.

The Withy Bed has been gardened by volunteers for years now. Yvonne Spencer leads a Green Gardening team who regularly meet on Friday mornings to garden with wildlife in mind.

The Community Orchard was planted in 2014. Tim Harrison, a local professional gardener, recently showed a group of tree sponsors how to prune their trees.

Begbie Meadow and Orchard

Jo and Paul Lurie have created a colourful insect-friendly wildflower border with the co-operation of the Parish Council.

Hedge and scrub planting at Grey Barn

Dilys and Howard Thomas worked with ‘Trees for Dorset’ to plant 300 whips and larger trees.
